Shangri-La, known in Tibetan as Gyalthang, is a Tibetan town in northwest Yunnan at about 3,300 meters. Its draws are Songzanlin Monastery, founded in 1679, the rebuilt lanes of Dukezong Old Town, and wide meadows and lakes in the hills around it. The air is thin, so the pace is slow by necessity.
It suits travelers who are comfortable at altitude and want Tibetan culture and open landscapes without going to Tibet. It is the natural end of a Yunnan trip through Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, and the train from Lijiang lets you climb in stages.
Arrive by train from Lijiang and keep the first day gentle: check in near the old town, walk the lanes of Dukezong slowly, and climb Guishan Park for the prayer wheel and the view at sunset.
On the second day, take a DiDi to Songzanlin in the morning and spend the afternoon on the grassland at Napahai. Give the third day to Pudacuo, booked in advance, starting early to have time on the Shudu Lake boardwalk. Then take the train back to Lijiang, or fly to Kunming.
Our high-speed train guide covers booking with a passport, and the paying in China guide explains linking a foreign card to Alipay for DiDi and tickets.
