A canal city of walled classical gardens and whitewashed lanes, close enough to Shanghai for a day trip.

The best-known of Suzhou's classical gardens, laid out around ponds, pavilions and covered walkways. Tickets are real-name and timed, booked 1–7 days ahead: ¥80 in April, May and July to October, ¥70 in other months.
A 1.6 km canal lane of whitewashed houses, small cafés and pingtan storytelling parlours, about 20 minutes' walk south of the Humble Administrator's Garden. Free to walk, and quietest early or late.
A smaller garden west of the old town, known for its long covered corridors, framed windows and tall lake rocks. Open 7:30–17:00 until 31 October and 7:30–16:30 from 1 November.
A wooded hill northwest of the old town, topped by Yunyan Pagoda, a brick tower built in 961 that leans visibly. Booking online 1–7 days ahead is advised; passports are accepted. Metro Line 6 to Huqiu.
A canal street of about 3.6 km running from Changmen Gate toward Tiger Hill. The street is free and always open; come at dusk, when the red lanterns are lit.
A deboned whole fish, scored and fried so it fans open, served under a sweet-and-sour tomato and vinegar sauce.
Thin, firm noodles in clear broth with a topping chosen separately; braised pork belly is the classic, and three-shrimp noodles appear in spring.
Freshwater crab in season from September to December, best in November, eaten with dark vinegar and ginger.
Suzhou’s old town is a web of canals and lanes holding the classical gardens on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The gardens are small and walled, made to be walked slowly: ponds, rockeries, pavilions and views framed by doorways and windows. Between them run canal streets such as Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street.
It is the easiest side trip from Shanghai, from about 25 minutes by high-speed train. Most visitors come for a day. Stay a night if you want Tiger Hill and an unhurried evening on Shantang Street. It suits garden lovers, photographers and anyone who wants a quieter day between big cities.
Take an early train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou station (our high-speed train guide explains booking) and be at the Humble Administrator’s Garden for your booked slot, ideally at 7:30. Walk south to Pingjiang Road for a bowl of Suzhou noodles and an hour along the canal. After lunch, take a taxi or the metro west to the Lingering Garden, then go on to Shantang Street for dusk before the train back.
With a night in town, give Tiger Hill a morning and walk or take a canal boat along Shantang Street. Garden tickets, boats and metro rides are easiest to pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card; our payments guide covers the setup. If you arrive in China through Shanghai, check the visa-free entry rules for your passport first.
Checked on 29 October 2026. Opening times and ticket rules change; confirm on the official site before you go.
