The fastest way from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is the high-speed train from West Kowloon: 14 minutes to Futian, for HK$79 in second class. The cheapest is the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau, about 45 minutes from Admiralty for HK$52.20 with an Octopus card, followed by a walk through both border checks.
Fares and times below were checked on 29–30 October 2026 against MTR’s fare charts and timetable for trains from 11 October 2026, MTR’s open fare data, and the Hong Kong Immigration and Transport Departments. High-speed rail fares are set in yuan, and the Hong Kong dollar price is adjusted on the first day of each month, so it can move by a few dollars.

The high-speed timetable for trains from 11 October 2026 has the first departure from West Kowloon at 07:01 and the last at 23:00, with about 50 trains a day stopping at Futian. The Hong Kong section of the line is only 26 km long, which is why the trip is so short.
Is the West Kowloon high-speed train worth it?
For most visitors, yes. Both sets of immigration checks happen inside West Kowloon station, so you step off at Futian or Shenzhen North straight into mainland China with no further border queue. Futian station is in central Shenzhen. Shenzhen North is the hub for onward high-speed trains into Guangdong and beyond.
MTR’s departure guide sets out the steps. You can start the checks up to 90 minutes before departure. At the ticket gates on level B1 you scan the passport you booked with, then go through security and down to level B3 for Hong Kong departure and mainland arrival checks. The ticket and ID check closes 30 minutes before departure, and the platform gates close 5 minutes before. MTR says the whole process usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, longer at weekends and on holidays.
In yuan, second class to Futian costs ¥68, first class ¥109 and business ¥204. Child fares are roughly half the adult published fare. Tickets are sold through MTR and the official 12306 China Railway app and website, both in English. Book ahead for Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and public holidays, when the short trains fill up. Our high-speed trains guide explains 12306 booking with a passport.
Taking the MTR to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau
The East Rail Line runs from Admiralty through Kowloon to two border stations. The Transport Department puts the journey from Admiralty to Lo Wu at about 45 minutes, with trains every 3 to 10 minutes. The first train from Admiralty leaves at 06:04 and the last at 23:01. Fares from MTR’s open data are HK$52.20 with an Octopus card from Admiralty or Central, and HK$44.30 from Tsim Sha Tsui. Both border stations sit inside the Frontier Closed Area, so you can only travel to them if you are crossing the border.
- Lo Wu leads to Luohu Port, next to Luohu station on Shenzhen Metro Line 1. The control point is open 06:30 to midnight.
- Lok Ma Chau leads to Futian Checkpoint, served by Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10. It closes earlier, at 22:30.
Travel guides report queues of 30 minutes or more at Lo Wu on weekends and holidays. The Immigration Department publishes live waiting times for each control point.
Can you walk from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?
Yes, and most people crossing by MTR do exactly that. At Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau you leave the train, walk through Hong Kong departure immigration, cross the boundary on foot and queue for mainland arrival immigration and customs on the Shenzhen side. Then you pick up the Shenzhen Metro. There is no train that runs through.
Two road crossings are also handled on foot once you arrive by bus. Huanggang Port is the only crossing open 24 hours, and Lok Ma Chau shuttle buses and late coaches run to it. Shenzhen Bay Port, open 06:30 to midnight, is reached by Hong Kong buses B2 and B3 from Yuen Long and Tuen Mun, at HK$15.80 to HK$16.50, and by green minibus 618 from Tin Shui Wai. Cross-boundary coaches also run from Kowloon and the airport to both ports. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge is for Zhuhai and Macao, so you do not need it for Shenzhen.
How to get from Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen
Ferry from SkyPier. If you land at Hong Kong International Airport and are heading straight to Shenzhen, you can take a ferry to Shekou or to Fuyong, which is linked by free shuttle bus to Shenzhen Bao’an airport, without passing through Hong Kong immigration. Cathay Pacific’s guide says to buy the ticket at the transfer desks in arrivals area E2 and hand over your baggage tag so your bags are transferred. Hong Kong Airport Authority says SkyPier is for transfer passengers only, not for journeys starting in Hong Kong, and the transfer must be on the day of your flight. The crossing to Shekou takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Published fares disagree: Travel China Guide lists HK$198 economy to Shekou in its August 2026 timetable, while other guides quote HK$290 to HK$340. Check with the operator for your date.
Coach. Cross-boundary coaches leave from the airport for Shenzhen Bay, Huanggang, Futian Checkpoint and other points. MyChinaGuide’s September 2026 summary puts fares at about HK$150 to HK$180 and the trip at 60 to 90 minutes. The airport’s own Hong Kong–Shenzhen Airports Link coach to Bao’an airport leaves every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 19:30.
Airport Express and high-speed rail. The Airport Express to Kowloon station costs HK$115, or HK$105 with an Octopus card, and takes about 20 minutes. From there it is a short walk to West Kowloon for the train to Futian. Allow about two hours door to door.
Ferry from the city. Travel China Guide lists three sailings a day from the Sheung Wan ferry terminal to Shekou, about 55 minutes, in its 2025 timetable. Confirm before you rely on it.
Do I need a visa to go from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?
Yes, unless you qualify for a visa-free entry. Hong Kong has its own immigration system, so crossing into Shenzhen counts as entering mainland China. Your Hong Kong entry does not cover it, and a single-entry Chinese visa used earlier in the trip cannot be reused.
30-day visa-free. Citizens of 50 countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most EU countries, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, at any crossing. Our visa-free entry guide has the full list.
240-hour transit for Americans. The United States is not on the 30-day list, so US citizens need a visa or must use the 240-hour visa-free transit. Hong Kong counts as a separate region for this rule: MTR’s own example is Canada to Hong Kong, then Shenzhen, then on to Thailand. You need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours, and you must stay within the permitted area, which covers Guangdong. Going back to Hong Kong does not count. The entry port matters too. West Kowloon station became an approved entry port in November 2025, and Shekou ferry port and Shenzhen airport were already on the list, but the published lists we checked do not include Lo Wu, Futian, Huanggang or Shenzhen Bay. Take the high-speed train. See can Americans travel to China for the visa itself.
144-hour Greater Bay Area tours. Foreign nationals of countries with diplomatic relations with China can enter Guangdong visa-free for up to 144 hours if they join a tour group organised by a travel agency registered in Hong Kong or Macao. The group must enter and leave together, and travel is limited to ten cities, Shenzhen among them. The Chongqing government still listed the policy in June 2026.
Port visas. Shenzhen issues port visas at Luohu, Huanggang, Shekou and the airport to visitors with urgent travel needs who could not get a visa in advance. Agencies describe a five-day, Shenzhen-only version, but eligibility and fees depend on your nationality. Do not build a trip around it.
Money, payments and phone data at the border
Hong Kong runs on Hong Kong dollars, Octopus cards and contactless bank cards. None of these work on the Shenzhen side, where prices are in yuan and most people pay by Alipay or WeChat Pay. Set up Alipay with a foreign card before you cross, using our paying in China guide, and carry some yuan in cash. Shenzhen Metro customer service centres, including those at Luohu, Huanggang, Futian and Shenzhen North, sell tickets with Visa, Mastercard and other foreign cards.
Check your phone data before you leave Hong Kong. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram do not load on Chinese mobile networks, and a Hong Kong-only SIM or eSIM may not cover the mainland. Roaming on your home plan, or a travel eSIM that names mainland China, keeps them working. Our eSIM and VPN guide explains the difference.
Can you do a day trip from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?
Yes, if your passport allows entry. With the high-speed train you can be in Futian 14 minutes after leaving West Kowloon; check the last train back in the 12306 or MTR timetable for your date. Also check the closing time of the crossing you plan to use on the way home: Lok Ma Chau shuts at 22:30 and Lo Wu at midnight, while Huanggang stays open all night. Our Shenzhen guide suggests what to see, and Hong Kong covers the other side.
If you would rather have someone meet you at the border with a car, a Hosted China host can arrange a car and driver.
